Absence calculator

What do absence and staff turnover cost your organisation each year? Enter four figures and get an instant estimate, plus what a small reduction would save. All assumptions are shown with their source, and you can adjust them yourself.

Your organisation

Based on a full-time job, including holiday pay. The amount filled in is an example.

The share of working days lost to illness. Filled in: the Dutch average for 2025 according to CBS, Statistics Netherlands (5.4%).

The share of your employees who leave and are replaced each year. The percentage filled in is an example; enter your own figure.

Assumptions (adjustable)

Default 70%: the legal minimum (art. 7:629 BW, the Dutch Civil Code, for up to 104 weeks). Many cao’s (collective labour agreements) require 100% in the first year of illness; if so, adjust it.

Default 20%: deliberately lower than the CBS average, where labour costs per hour were 27% above gross pay (2019).

Default 20%: recruitment, selection, onboarding and lost productivity. Based on a review study by the Center for American Progress (2012): median 21% of annual salary, 20% for lower salaries. There is no comparable public Dutch figure; treat this as an indication.

Indicative, no guarantee. The result is a simplified estimate based on your input and the assumptions alongside. It isn’t a quote or a promise of results. The actual costs and effects depend on your sector, your cao (collective labour agreement), your absence insurance (verzuimverzekering) and your own approach.

How we calculate

  • Absence = employees × annual salary × (1 + employer costs) × absence rate × pay continued during illness.
  • Turnover = employees × turnover × annual salary × replacement costs.
  • Example = the chosen percentage of both amounts.

We deliberately calculate conservatively. For absence, we only count the pay that continues. Replacement, overtime by colleagues, support from the occupational health service (arbodienst), reintegration and lost production aren’t included. So the real costs are usually higher.
